Perfect White Balance

1) Duplicate the image
2) Filter>Blur>Average
3) Create a ‘curve’ adjustment layer
4) Select the handpicker in the middle to set the grey point, then click anywhere on the middle layer. This will transform the brown colour into 50% Grey.
5) Turn off the middle layer and the original background photo will now have the correct white balance.

My photography journey....

While waiting for the lovely Mrs to return home for her birthday, I decided to write about the digital cameras that I have over the past few years,

My first digital camera was a gift from a friend, it was a HP Photosmart 215, a mere 1.3 megapixel camera. Now this little baby eats AA batteries for lunch! Even the highest powered lithium battery was consumed in less than 100 shots. I soon ditched it for my first pocketable digital camera - the SONY DSC-U10. This little baby was cool, but soon I outgrew it and ditched it for the SONY DSC-P2. The DSC-P2 was a 2.0 Megapixel camera and that served me well for 1 month when I decided to upgrade to the Fuji S304Z, my first SLR-like digital camera. My appetite got bigger and soon th Fuji made way for another Fuji, the S602Z. Now the S602Z was a solid performer and it kept me occupied for a long while. And during the course of having the S602Z, I learnt a lot more about digital photography and consider quite good at it.

It was then that I hunger for the superior image quality of a DSLR. I did a bit of research and decided at that time , the Olympus 4/3 system was what I wanted, and I've not looked back since... the photo quality of the E-300 was absolutely amazing. And soon, I find myself getting the entire series, E-420, E-520 and the E-620. I finally took the plunge and gotten the then flagship camera, the E-3. In between, I upgraded the lenses that I have and now with the recent purchase of the E-5, my setup is complete.

So after 8 years and $$$, I am happy with my current setup, and can safely say that I can take on a variety of subjects with certain confidence - may not be the best, but definitely something that I can be proud of...

So what next? Nothing... just continue with the journey.... :)

My new walk about camera - E-P1

My new E-P1 is an excellent walk about camera!

Together with the 17mm pancake lens, it's easy to carry around and taking snaps of objects and the Art Filters are fun to use.

Online reviews 'complains' about the speed of the autofocus, but in real use, it is not an issue at all! It focuses fast enough and the zero shutter lag means I get the shot when most PnS cameras don't. I wouldn't compare the handling to a DSLR, it's different, and the E-P1 is not meant to be a DSLR replacement.

The Olympus Pen - the retro-looking E-P1

Yup, I couldn't resist and have to land my hands on this cute little thing. To me, it's the perfect 'take anywhere and snap away' camera! The 17mm lens is so small and light. I got the MMF-1 adaptor at the same time, in order to use my 4/3 format 25mm pancake lens which I like alot!

The image quality from this little camera have been impressive, as far as my eyes can tell, the image quality is the best of the 4/3 cameras! High ISO is now not an issue (I never think it was anyway) with the 'small' 4/3 sensor.

Now... what shall I do with my E-620?

These are the cameras and lenses that is currently in my stable. The beauty of a DSLR system is the ability to swap lenses for the type of photography and purpose. So I don't confine myself to using a certain DSLR body with a certain lens. I mix and match according to what I want to achieve in the image.

The E-3

My main camera for 'serious' shots is the E-3. The E-3 is the beginning of Chapter 2 of the Four Thirds system and continues in style with it's weather sealed body, tough and extremely ergonmic body. Being the flagship camera of Olympus' Four Thirds line-up, the E-3 scores very well although it's reviews were a mixed bag mainly due to it's weight and size. When I was deciding between the E-3 and the newer E-30, the weather sealing and the ergonomics of the E-3 won me over especially both were almost at the same price!

During the recent Chiang Mai trip, I took the E-3 for trekking and it literally went through rain and shine with me... The guide was amazed that the camera was still functioning well after going through rain and after being splashed onto during the bamboo rafting journey along Chiang Mai's rivers. I'm equally pleased with the tough and ruggedness of the E-3.

Most importantly, the E-3 produces very very good results - image quality is top-notch and that, to me is what matters most!

When I started my foray into the DSLR world, I knew nuts about sensors, interchangeable lens, apertures, shutter speeds etc... 4 years on since my first DSLR - the E-300, I've owned a fair share of DSLRs and have learned a lot about photography and what works and what does not work. I won't say I'm a Master but I think I qualify as some sort of an expert :P

I've got my hands on the E-620 and I'm impressed at what this little thing can do... I carry it with me everyday, ready to take snaps of things and people that caught my interest and attention. It's the best DSLR that Olympus has built to-date and it certainly stand firm to the promise of the Four Thirds standard. It is also one of the rare DSLR that has caught a lot of attention and has been getting rave reviews all over. The usual issues with the Four Thirds system such as focusing speed, high ISO noise, dynamic range all seems to go away or do very well under controlled test environments.

My Shootsac

Alright, the shootsac arrived and I had a good look at it. I would say the shootsac is quite well-made, the neoprene material appears durable and the stitching seems strong.

I've been using it for a week and I must say, it's one of the most comfortable bag I've ever used. It's not designed to be a camera bag but I find that I can fit the E-620 body into one of the slot, the 12-60mm into another slot, and finally the FL-36R. I can also carry the expodisc and some other smaller accessories in the back poackets. So far so good and I'm liking it a lot!

I took the sac and the E-3 for a spin this afternoon, and it has been a pleasure to use. The E-3 had the 12-60mm and the R-strap was carrying the combo. In the shootsac, I had the 50-200mm, 50mm and the FL-50R plus some other accessories. The entire set of gears were easy to carry, compared to, in the past, where I dump everything into the Crumpler 6/7 million dollar home and end up with a shoulder-ache at the end of the day. Changing lens was easy with the shootsac, as it was designed to do so... and this is the only bag that I'm comfortable keeping the rear lens cap off. The neoprene material will not scratch the rear lens element. With the rear lens cap off, changing lens was a breeze. The only issue is the lack of a shoulder pad, I'm going to get a nice shoulder pad to go along with the shootsac.

For travelling and hiking etc, I'll still use the Lowepro Primus, but for about town and day-to-day commuting, the shootsac is perfect! I have to say, the shootsac is one expensive bag, but in my opinion, it's worth the money for what I'm using it for, and on top of that, it's damn cool looking!! :)

In my search for the 'perfect' camera bag, I think this looks the best. It's technically not a camera bag, but more a lens bag. But I think it suits its purpose and my style of shooting.

Finally, from the developments of the first true digital SLR system of the Four Thirds come the micro Four Thirds. And the E-P1 is the first micro Four Thirds from Olympus. Cute little thing... I might get one for myself.. :)

f/8 and be there

It's an old phrase by photojurnalists, it actually has two meanings. First it talks about your aperture being f/8 and the next about being there. Here's the keyword - 'be there'. It's not just saying that to set your aperture to f/8 and be there, but more the meaning of being there, being at the location, being at the place you want to take the photograph.

If you're not there, you can't have the shot, just simple as that.

I carry my camera wherever I go (not the E-3), so that I can grab a shot anytime I want to, and anywhere I go to.

With the E-30, Olympus introduced the Art Filters... I thought the idea was a good one. I do hope one day the Art Filters will catch on among the Olympus community and become a popular addition and improvements... Oh no... I went for a walk on Sunday, and don't know why I walk into the camera shop, and don't know why the shop has a E-620 on display, and don't know why I ask to play with the E-620, and don't know why I took out my wallet to pay for the E-620, and don't know why I'm a happy person now... hehehe.. sigh... Anyway, the E-620 is a nice little camera, paired with the 25mm pancake lens - I think it's about the smallest DSLR to carry around.

There is only a minor quibble - the grip. For some reason, it doesn't feel as comfortable as the E-420 which I had before and like very much. But I have to sell it as I realise having image stabilisation do help me quite a bit. I guess I will get used to it soon, it's a tradeoff for the in-body image stabilisation which the E-420 (and the E-450) lacks.

Macau at Dusk

I took this picture from the viewpoint of Our Lady of Penha Church which is located on a hill at the south-west of Macau. The church overlooked the Sai-Van bridge and the Macau Tower.

Taken around sunset - added a little more red to the sky, and a vignette to enhance the feeling of dusk. I'm actually very pleased with the end result. :)

A visit to Hong Kong Disneyland proves the perfect test for my newly acquired 70-300mm lens. Under good light, the lens performed admirably. For the price, for the reach, and for the kind of performance, really no complains but only compliments!

Wow, what a pretty little camera! Olympus combines the best of the E-420 (Size & portability), E-520 (Image Stabilisation) and E-30 (Features & technology), and came out with this little winner.

Olympus E-620 Features & Specifications

At PMA 2009, it attracted many attention and raised eyebrows. I jumped onto the DSLR wagon and invested in the 4/3 system some time ago, and I guess there is finally light at the end of the tunnel with Olympus' continued commitment to the 4/3 system.

Damn, now I regret getting the E-520 in December :(

Importance of White Balance

I took these 2 photos just few minutes apart. The first was using auto white balance and the second using the Expodisc to get the white balance. The second photo is definitely more pleasing and is the accurate rendering of the scene. Try as I may, but I could not replicate the white balance from the second photo through Lightroom nor Photoshop.

Lesson learned: ALWAYS use the Expodisc :)

I did a quick calculation, and from the time I stepped up to a DSLR, I've spent almost S$9,000 on the equipment that I currently owned!! This is excluding the E-300, 14-54mm lens, kirk ballhead that I've sold... Hmm.. that's quite a sum for just a hobby... But I do enjoy the hobby a lot, even though I have no time to take photos now, but playing with the cameras once in a while and looking at my past works does give me a lot of satisfaction. :)
